“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!.” 1 John 3:1 NLT
You remember that cute little children’s song that you probably sang in Sunday School as a kid right?
“Jesus loves me, this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak, but He is strong
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so”
—Poem originally by Anna B. Warner
I remember this song being sung to me over and over throughout the years of my childhood, but only when I started singing it to my daughter some 30 years later did the words become real to me. As I’ve sung this to my daughter, I’ve often switched the word “me” in the chorus to her name, Andie. That way it’s personal to her. But as I was singing “Jesus Loves Andie” for the umpteenth time, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and said, “Not only do I love Andie, but I also still love Bethany.”
Cue the tears of an emotional and hormonal postpartum mama! Jesus still loves ME too! After these 30-something years of adulthood, He still is singing “Yes, Jesus loves Bethany” to ME to make it personal to another one of His beloved daughters.
God has told us repeatedly (and proven to us by sending Jesus to die on the cross in our place) that he loves us. 1 John 3:1 ← our verse today is just one example. The Bible is a woven tapestry of scripture laced with love from our heavenly Father.
If you grew up in a Christian household, you probably heard the phrase “God loves you,” or “Jesus loves you” so many times that you became desensitized to it. During my season of postpartum depression, I knew that Jesus loved me, but because I had become desensitized to it, I had to take a step back and scrape off the spiritual callouses that I had acquired. I had to re-examine the verses that stated His love for me and let them permeate the wounds of my hurting heart.
I started singing “Jesus Loves Me” to myself. Yep, my 30-year-old self started hearing the phrase “Jesus Loves Bethany,” again and again until I could feel the love of my Savior saturate my dry soul.
How about you? Do you need a good rain of love to minister to your dry soul? If your answer is “yes” then I challenge you today to start singing “Jesus Loves ____________ (fill your name in here)”.
Watch your emotions get in line with the truth of God’s Word. Watch the Holy Spirit begin to minister to you about God’s love. Watch our Heavenly Father prove that He is near to you again and again. Jesus. Does. Love. You.
