And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17
My little girls love picking mommy “flowers.” The flowers that happen to be the most prevalent in their world are technically categorized as weeds. You know them, those bright, school-bus-yellow dandelions that litter lawns across the world.
It seems like each day in the summer, my little daughters come running towards me with a fistful of these, gracing my stash of empty Mason jars with their bright faces.
When I look at them, they make me smile, and they remind me that this precious season where “dandelions are beautiful” is temporary. I choose to view these lovingly picked weeds as flowers, because they are picked by daughters that I love.
However, earlier this week, I ran into someone who reminded me that most people view them as weeds. They grab the nearest bottle of Round-Up and demolish those little sunny heads. They grumble, complain and fret over the sight of them poking through the ground.
But what if we chose to have a different perspective? What if we chose to look at laundry piles around us through a lens of thanksgiving, the overflowing dishes in the sink with gratefulness to God for full stomachs, or a bouquet of dandelions with true joy in our hearts for the dirty hands that picked them.
What if we viewed the potential “weeds” in our lives as “flowers?” Wouldn’t life be brighter, better, and more fulfilling? I would argue that it would. God wants us to look beyond the surface of something that outwardly looks like a chore, a task, or a problem and to choose joy in the middle of it.
An attitude of gratitude is one that always brings Him glory. Isn’t God amazing for even making weeds beautiful?
Reflection Questions:
What is something in your life that you’ve viewed as a weed — that you need to view as a blessing?
How is your attitude when certain weeds in your life pop up unexpectedly? How can you grow in this?
