He Redeems My Life From the Pit

“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion”

Psalm 103:1-4 NIV

Let’s talk about the pit.

The Lord is so gracious in so many ways, but I have personally experienced His beautiful redemption from the pit of depression. If you’re reading this article—you maybe can resonate with the comparison that I’m about to make.

During the emotionally fragile season of postpartum, things were initially going well! But somewhere between the sleep deprivation, feeding schedule and being bound to my house due to the COVID complexities of 2020, I found myself in a pit of depression.

I didn’t know how I had entered the pit (other than recognizing we have an enemy who’s main goal is to get us off track), but I knew I didn’t want to stay there. I remember internally searching for a way out. A ladder, an answer that would lead me to the sunshine and blue skies of the life I had once enjoyed.

But for months, I couldn’t find it. I was stuck in the pit with no visible way out.

Thankfully, I knew that God was for me and didn’t want me to stay in the pit, so I began to pray and ask Him how to get out. Through months of therapy, medication, intense study of His Word, mentoring sessions and massive amounts of support from my husband and family—I could finally spot the rungs of the ladder that I needed to climb.

One rung by one rung. One healthy choice by one healthy choice. One thought by one thought. I began to climb.

And He redeemed me from that pit.

My dear mama, if you feel like you are in the pit of depression today, let this serve as a reminder that He yearns to redeem you too! He wants you to call out to Him for help so that He can show you where the ladder is! He will be your support and steady you as you climb the rungs back to the surface. He will be cheering you on, grabbing your hand at the top celebrating your entry back into the sunshine.

He is YOUR redeemer from the pit, too.

Have you turned to Him and asked for help? Here’s what I encourage you to pray today:

“Dear Lord, I’ve been thrown into a pit and I can’t see the way out. I need you. I need your wisdom to help me overcome this attack.

Help me to find the ladder. Help me to trust you as I climb it. Help me to trust the people and resources that you will send across my path. You are a faithful Father who has redeemed me out of this pit and I cling onto that promise today.

Thank you Lord for loving me. Thank you for never leaving me.

In Christ’s name I pray. Amen.”
